UC Irvine Extension adds Human Resources Management Certificate Program to Growing List of Online Course Offerings

posted Tuesday, November 13, 2007 11:00 PM

UC Irvine Extension adds Human Resources Management Certificate Program to Growing List of Online Course Offerings

Asynchronous, Accelerated Learning Option Allows Working Students Greater Flexibility

The University of California, Irvine Extension has announced the online availability of its Human Resources Management Certificate Program, offered to provide working students with a flexible alternative to on-campus study. The program, developed in collaboration with the National Human Resources Association, employs coursework that reflects the most current activities and functions in human resources, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully fulfill the role of human resources generalist. “Training and Human Resources Development,” a course offered through the accelerated program, will also be made available to self-learners at UC Irvine Extension’s OpenCourseWare Web site.

“Because many of the students that are attracted to our Human Resources management certificate program are working professionals – HR generalists, assistants, trainers, recruiters, staffing specialists, and office managers – the accelerated, online format represents a flexible option that’s really necessary for them to learn,” explains Adam Porter, SPHR, senior director of human resources at Edwards Lifesciences, LLC and advisory committee member at UC Irvine Extension. “The online format offers them the same comprehensive and in-depth course of study as the traditional format, but enables them to achieve their learning and professional goals on their time and in a setting off-campus that works with their own schedule.”

UC Irvine Extension’s program is highly regarded by local employers for its “real-world” focus, immediate applicability in the workplace, and most up-to-date information on domestic and international HR practices. Students can expect to leave the program with the ability to confidently interface with those in specialty human resources areas and have a positive influence on the HR functions within their respective organizations. Each course in the program stresses practical information and techniques useful in identifying, attracting and retaining employees and in positioning human resources as a strategic business partner in a highly competitive work environment.

“Offering the program online is not just important to the students who are already working professionals,” relates Linda Denton, MHROD, corporate learning and executive coach and advisory committee member for the program. “The OpenCourseWare offering represents a huge benefit to self-learners who want to increase their knowledge about human resources. It gives them a glimpse into the UC Irvine Extension experience, at no cost.”

Other OpenCourseWare curricula available online includes “The Capital Markets,” a course part of the Investor Relations certificate program and “Introduction to Spa and Hospitality Operations,” a course part of the Spa and Hospitality management certificate program. Easily accessed at http://ocw.uci.edu/courses, the courses are offered to accommodate the needs of busy professionals. For more information about the Human Resources Management Certificate Program available online through UC Irvine Extension, contact Kathy Amoroso at kamaroso@uci.edu or visit online at http://unex.uci.edu/certificates/business_mgmt/hr/.

Go to the job fair & apply online – double your chances of success!

posted Monday, November 12, 2007 5:17 PM

Sometimes you go to a job fair and an employer will ask you to follow up with an online resume submission. Other times, you’ll apply online and a recruiter will ask you to meet them at their job fair. Which is it – why do you need to do both?

When an employer makes the difficult decision to invest in a new employee, many of them will really want to get to know that employee – you – as well as possible before making that final decision. So go ahead, show them you can follow up with that job fair encounter by applying online (tip - grab their business card and send them a cover letter reminding them that you met them at the job fair). If an online application leads to an invitation to meet with an employer at a job fair, do it! This is your chance at that important first interview.

Another important note about resumes and job fairs:
Sometimes employers want to get out and meet people face-to-face and also require (for applicant tracking purposes, ease of managing paperwork, etc.) an online record of your application. At job fairs, employers may decline your paper resume and ask you to submit your resume online. Don’t be discouraged. Accommodate the employer’s request by following their application guidelines. Your efforts on both fronts (attendance at the fair and applying online) are deeply appreciated by the employer.

It may seem like a lot of effort and courage to approach an employer more than once to get a job – but like any relationship, the one between you and your future employer deserves your best effort. Give it your all – and as always, let us know about your successes!

You are invited! HOUSING OUR WORKFORCE:A Business Solution to Orange County’s Housing Crisis

posted Tuesday, October 23, 2007 4:47 PM

HOUSING OUR WORKFORCE

A Business Solution to Orange County ’s Housing Crisis

November 15, 2007
7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Radisson Hotel, Newport Beach

Hosted by the Orange County Housing Trust

Co-Hosted by:  Mary Erickson Community Housing
National Human Resources Association
Professionals in Human Resources Association, District 14

Employer Assisted Housing . . . A Corporate Solution to Orange County’s Housing Crisis

One of the biggest challenges facing the Orange County business community today is the negative impact housing costs have on a company’s ability to attract and retain workers, both skilled and unskilled.  “Businesses have been telling us for the last five years that they cannot find enough skilled workers,” says Lucy Dunn, CEO of the Orange County Business Council. “Forecasts estimate we could lose up to 20 percent of our young adults in the next 20 years, mainly due to the lack of entry-level housing. Losing these additional young workers hurts the county’s businesses and threatens our future economic growth.”

A solution that has proven effective in other parts of California and the nation is employer-assisted housing (EAH).   A number of large public service employers, particularly universities and hospitals, have developed EAH programs to both assist their employees and encourage reinvestment in their surrounding neighborhoods.  Private corporations offering EAH benefits to their employees include Starwood (owner of the Orange County ’s St. Regis Resort), Computer Associates, Tyson Foods, Honeywell, Harley-Davidson, and the GMAC companies. Health care providers with EAH programs include nationwide HMOs such as Kaiser Permanente, as well as a number of local hospitals and medical centers.

Local governments seem to be particularly inclined to support EAH programs given that they promote regional economic development and often leverage private dollars to support housing.  Municipal and county governments in high-cost housing markets, such as Los Angeles , are using EAH to close the housing affordability gap for teachers, firefighters, and police.  The City of Irvine is working on a program to assist  its police officers with home purchases in the city.

If you are corporate CEO, COO, CFO or Human Resources executive, a housing advocate, or a government official with responsibility for housing programs, please mark your calendar for November 15, 2007 .  This will be the first symposium in Orange County featuring informational programs, expert panels and case studies that focus directly on Employer Assisted Housing programs and what companies and local government can do to provide more quality housing for our workforce and their families.   For information, call 949.559.9382.

Three BIG Ways Jobing.com Delivers Diversity to Employers

posted Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:19 AM

You already know that Jobing.com is the Number One Local Job Board. Did you also know that Diversity is not only a huge priority to us, but that it is built right into our product? We have local a network of local diversity partners. We help our clients with their diversity efforts in three ways. Our jobs cross post to a Diversity Network of local job boards (Click here to see), we bring more diverse candidates and resources to those candidates and employers at out Career Expos, and in partnership with local HR Associations, and we provide diversity focused professional development opportunities to the local recruitment community.

1. All jobs on Jobing.com also cross-post to our network of local associations, chambers, schools, and diversity organizations. Our growing Greater LA “Diversity Network” currently includes:

OC National Hispanic Nurses Association
National Association of African Americans in Human Resources –LA Chapter Association of Women in Technology
American Business Women’s Association
Latino Coalition
Templo Calvario – Community Development Center
Latino Business Student Association
National Association of Women in Construction
National Latina Business Women’s Association-OC
Orange County President’s Council

 2. In Greater LA, all three of our markets have Career Expos. We have several partnerships in place with these partners I just named as well as Los Angeles Urban League, Department of Rehab, LA Department on Disability, Goodwill, and the Braille Institute. In these Career Expo partnerships Jobing.com provides a Disabilities Resources Booth for jobseekers. Through our partnerships, all of these partners advertise our Expos to their clients. As a result we are able to both deliver jobseekers from diverse back grounds and diverse aptitudes to our Employers at the Expo as well as provide resources for those jobseekers that might have special needs or a language interpreters.

3. We partner with Local HR Associations to provide professional development opportunities in the area of Diversity. Several of our Community Relations Managers sit on the boards and planning committees of Diversity Conferences and Associations.
Two specific current efforts in Greater LA are:

In partnership with The Los Angles Urban League, Jobing has recently launched an active LA chapter of the National Association of African American’s in Human Resources Association
In partnership with a District of PIHRA, Jobing.com is hosting a Diversity and Leadership Summit in OC on 10/30 where we have known companies like, ABC- Disney, Pepsi, and Boeing sharing their Diversity recruitment and inclusion strategies for attendees to learn from and create their own strategies.

Relationship Recruiting

posted Wednesday, August 22, 2007 4:38 PM

I’m not a coffee drinker, and yet I love coffee houses.  I’m one that so often “just does” rather than spending time to “just think”.  It’s my rare times in a coffee house with a friend that I allow myself this luxury – to just think.  It’s one of these treasured moments recently that I was sitting with a recruiter friend of mine.  I was meeting her there because she was going to be conducting interviews there that day.

Now this recruiter friend of mine works for a major corporation – a well-known company – or so I thought.  She said she likes to conduct interviews at this local hangout because it tended to put her candidates more at ease.  She was able to build a rapport with them and get through to their real personality.  While she sipped her mocha latte skinny with extra foam and I my iced chai tea (I’ve officially crossed over), we debated the benefits to allowing a job seeker to feel at ease…  She said, I wish there was a way to put more candidates at ease, even before the interview.

To my surprise, she said that her major corporation still had a very difficult time in recruiting top talent because of their lack of name recognition amongst the candidate pool they were seeking.  Job seekers just didn’t know who they were or what they did as a business.  And then, the candidates that did recognize their name were so intimidated, they often either didn’t apply or just plain blew the interview because of being so nervous.

So what could she do?  It was her job to both brand the company as an employer of choice and then to also pierce the corporate façade… the big scary giant… and make the company real.  After all, people don’t work for corporations really.  They work for people.  How could she make this about the people again?

In our infinite, over caffeinated wisdom, we came up with one possible solution.  Its about building relationships.  It’s the kind of relationship that you have with the radio or TV show host that you listen to every morning.  You get to feel like you know that person even though you’ve never met them.  This friend of mine has already started with her coffee house interviews as a way to put the candidate at ease.  Her next step would be to do more to reach out to more people with little effort… she was going to start to blog.

Simply put, a blog is a journal about the ongoing workings and happenings within the company.  Taken as a whole, it tells the people story of the company in a conversational, real tone.  Blogging in recruitment is gaining in popularity amongst all types of employers.  It gives the employer the ability to reach out and speak directly to their top candidate pool.  It answers all those questions that candidates need to know, but were afraid to ask.  And with today’s technology, employers can now reach out to thousands of potential applicants with little extra effort and literally no additional expenditure.

Shameless Plug:  Join the Jobing Community.  Blogging on Jobing.com is a free service.  It is now open to all local employers and community organizations with ties to local workforce development.  Speak to your industry specialist today about blogging on Jobing.com.
