With all the talk lately of recession it's only natural that you might be feeling a little nervous, especially if you are actively searching for a job. It’s true the recent rise in the U.S. unemployment rate -- 5.1% in March -- indicates that fewer jobs are being created, but that doesn't apply to all industries or jobs. Remember that and keep it in perspective - there are plenty of industries that are actually still growing like healthcare and technology. However, just be aware that your job search may take a bit longer and you may have to change up your routine.
First, don’t be afraid to look into companies in industries that you weren’t previously looking into like say education, energy or healthcare – all growth industries. Identify professional associations relating to that field and start attending meetings, make sure you are prepared and have your elevator pitch polished. You want to stand out, so it’s ok to say you are in transition from another industry – but identify your transferable skills and be ready to talk about them. (ok brag about them)LOL
Action plan:
Make a list of target companies – then ask your network for help. Ask everyone you know if they know anyone on your target company list. You never know who might know someone who can help you break into that company.
Attend any and all job fairs and post your resume on as many online job boards as possible. You want to make sure your resume is in front of as many different employers and hiring managers as possible.
Find a mentor and use them to keep yourself accountable. Check in regularly to make sure you are on the right track.
Give yourself a goal of telling your 30 second soundbite or elevator pitch to 10 people a day. Again, you never know who you are speaking to and who they might know or if they themselves are looking for someone with your skills.
Keep a daily journal of your efforts – so you can see your progress. Keep a "to Do" list. Work everyday toward your goals. Remember to treat your job search like it’s your job. The biggest obstacle is staying focused, making the calls and appointments, and getting out there.
Don’t get discouraged! The right job will come along – and the more enthusiasm you have the more people will gravitate toward you. If I’ve heard it once I’ve heard it a thousand times, employers know they can teach the skills – they also know, they cannot teach a good attitude, enthusiasm, drive and excitement. So get excited and get out there and find that job! Good luck!
