Blog Post: National Black MBA Assocation Inc. Helps drive recovery from the bottom up: Los Angeles Chapter hosts the Innaugural NBMBAA Entrepreneurial Institute

Great Depression or Second Renaissance? For African-American Entrepreneurs ready move, the current downturn could be the turning point of a lifetime. That’s why National Black MBA Association®, Inc., has partnered with State Farm and Wells Fargo to develop and present a series of business-building opportunities and resources for those committed to creating jobs, building wealth, and participating in the economy recovery. On Saturday, June 6, 2009, as State Farm will present the NBMBAA Entrepreneurial Institute an intense day of development for both start-up and more established entrepreneurs (Hosted by NBMBAA at the (Westin-Bonaventure Hotel, Los Angeles), this all-day emersion is part of a 5-city tour designed to deliver real lessons and insights for those trying to grow a business and find opportunity in a tough economy. During the Institute, Wells Fargo will also present the NBMBAA Innovation Whiteboard Challenge, a chance for aspiring entrepreneurs with an idea to pitch for a chance to win money and an invitation to the National Black MBA 31 st Annual Conference & Exposition in New Orleans for the national competition and institute sessions. “Our economy and our communities thrive when entrepreneurs thrive”, says Barbara L. Thomas, president and chief executive officer, National Black MBA Association. “We appreciate the efforts of our corporate partners like State Farm and Wells Fargo in helping us deliver on our promise to foster economic development for Black communities through our national and local market efforts. “Small business capital is back! However subsidiaries of our major financial institutions are the conduits to some of the economic stimulus funds. We hope to create awareness, preparation, collaboration and leveraging for our new and existing entrepreneurs into successful and sustainable business owners”, said Carolyn D. Trader, President, of the Los Angeles Chapter of the NBMBAA. Keynote speaker for the event is Janice Bryant-Howroyd, known as an innovative pioneer whose entrepreneurial knack led her to grow the business she started with less than two thousand dollars into a multi-million dollar corporation over the last 30 years. She is founder and CEO of ACT-1 Group, the largest minority, woman-owned employment agency in the nation. The working agenda for the Institute includes workshops by [Robert Lee, Professor, and Joe Mcghee, Chairman & CEO, American Biosurgical.
