Blog Post: Tips on how to land a Job in this Tough Market
posted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 12:26 PM
You'd have to be living under a rock if you don't know there is a bit of uncertainty in the economy right now... and that has a huge affect on everything - including the job market, but that doesn't mean it's time to panic or there are no jobs... That is simple not true. There are a ton of jobs out there, and industries that are still experiencing rapid growth.
It does mean however, that, as a job seeker in this kind of.... let's say interesting market... you have to be more strategic, realize the that the job-search process may take longer and change up your approach. Here are some great recommendations: * Tailor your resume - don't be generic. Change your resume to fit the job qualifications, think about how your current skills and talents apply directly to the responsibilities in the job you're going after. * Create a target list of companies you are interested in, send the list to everyone you know, asking them if they have a contact at a particular company. Using networking sites like LINKEDIN or FACEBOOK can help. You never know who you know that might be able to connect you with someone at one of your target companies. * Make sure your resume is fresh and posted on as many places as possible like online job boards and job fairs. * If you are not attending industry specific networking events - you are missing the boat. This is the best way to get in front of people who can hire you, recommend you or make an introduction. * Make sure your "elevator pitch" (30 second summary of your professional history) is perfect and practice it as much as possible and on as many people as possible. * Enthusiasm... your personality wins out every time.. so make sure you are up-beat and excited. This is the best way to attract people to you and get noticed. * Keep a "daily goals diary" and make sure you are keeping track of all your efforts. You'll feel good about what you have accomplished and keep yourself focused on what you need to do everyday to get to that goal. Community Comments
