Blog Post: Handling Wisecracks and Questions from Friends and Family Members
posted Thursday, March 13, 2008 6:01 AM
The other day I had a conversation with a job seeking candidate frustrated by some of the irritating quips and wisecracks made by friends and family members. Things like: “When are you going to get a job?” “Are you STILL looking?”… I gave her this advice and it made me think that there’s probably a few more people out there that are tired of that too. I hope this helps! ....
Don’t get defensive. Don't trash your friendship and don’t let them get to you! Realize that sometimes people make these wiseracks (or ask silly questions) because they are insecure themselves. That's right, your wisecracking friend or family member may be worrying about their own job security and it makes them feel better to poke at you! (Nothing like stress relief at someone else's expense) .... Sometimes people think they are being funny, and sometimes they just have bad manners. Keep your cool and dignity in your job search and keep positive with daily effort and follow up. Here’s a couple of dignified zingers for you: Wisecracks: When are you going to get a job? Are you still looking? Are you ever going to get a job? Zing: You know what? I look at new job opportunities every day. I’ll get a new job when I find the right one. Or Zing: I’m looking for the right job not just any job. The last thing I want to do is have a resume that looks like Swiss cheese. Then, change the subject the weather is always good so is the hottest sports news or celebrity gossip. Better still, ask them if there are any leads on jobs that they might know of… “So, who do you know who has a job for a talented hardworker like me?….. Surely YOU must know someone?…… Job seeking is a challenge. Hang in there it will pay off. Keep checking the jobing.com ads, follow up, network, work with reputable recruitment firms.... I wish you all the best in your efforts! *Super Tip: Always tell yourself positive thoughts. People pick up on your "vibes" don't go into an interview with a negative vibe! In a recent employer survey 78% of the hiring managers said they hire with their gut/instinct. If you're putting out negative vibes what do you think that does to your chances of getting hired? Keep telling yourself you can do it and there's a job out there for you! Michele Tassinari, CAC,CSP Synergy Solutions-Staffing and Executive Search Chief Relationship Officer email: info@smsicorp.com
