The Services Center for Independent Living (SCIL) has worked with people who are disabled of all ages in 22 cities in south east Los Angeles County—the East San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys—since 1980. Services include: self-advocacy training, assistive technology, a registry of sign language interpreters, housing information, independent living skills training, peer counseling, and personal care assistance, as well as information and referral about a variety of timely topics. Most services are provided at no cost to our consumers.
No other resource offers the array of services and cross disability expertise that we provide. Our goal is simply to encourage people to make good choices and exercise control over their own lives—that is, expand access to information and resources, increase their independence, and improve the quality of their lives. We will work with anyone who comes to us regardless of type of disability, race, gender, life style, or religious persuasion. At present, 90% of our staff and 60% of our Board of Directors have a significant disability. This gives us a unique insight into what our consumers face each day and permits us to more effectively guide them as they work to address their concerns, issues, and problems.
