Jobing Description
WORK SCHEDULE: 7 hrs/day; 10 mo/yr

Definition:
Under the general supervision of the DH/H coordinator, facilitates the communication process between the DH/H student and the classroom environment.

Class Characteristics:
Positions in this class must have strong ASL and PSE skills; understand the language structure of ASL and PSE; must be able to translate English to ASL or PSE; have the ability to voice and clarify communications while tutoring; use total communication as appropriate

Examples of Duties:

    1. Perform specialized duties requiring the application of and proficiency in accepted and designated sign languages such as Signed English, American Sign Language and finger spelling.
    2. Interpret mainstream and self-contained classroom lectures, group discussions, movies, plays, tapes, records, and general classroom instruction.
    3. Interpret informal conversations, telephone calls, and other verbal communications for assigned D/HH students; communicating intensity/feelings of originator.
    4. Translate simultaneously from sign language used by D/HH persons into spoken English which can be understood by hearing persons.
    5. Tutor and assist D/HH students, individually or in groups, in academic or elective subjects; attend both mainstream and self-contained classrooms, and assist teachers in self-contained classroom with instruction as assigned.
    6. Prepare, design, and develop instructional materials to assist D/HH students in a learning environment under the direction of a certificated teacher.
    7. Assist students in learning/practicing appropriate living/social skills and behaviors such as safety procedures, communications skills, independence, and decision making necessary for mainstreaming.
    8. Act as communicator between learner and teacher when necessary and between student and peers as appropriate.
    9. Consult with integrated class teachers to determine where students may need special help and provide the help through tutoring.
    10. Assists teachers with assessments and with the administration of tests by interpreting for D/HH students.
    11. Check work ability of hearing aids and listening devices for students.
    12. Assist D/HH students in a flexible and understanding manner.

Skills / Requirements
Knowledge of:
Sign systems used by the D/HH and basic knowledge of the Deaf culture.

Ability to:
Translate the spoken word into the language of signs at a normal conversational rate using the mode of sign that matches the student's need; reverse interpret from student sign to the spoken word.

Experience:
Minimum one year experience working with the Deaf community. This individual is able to communicate fluently orally and in sign language, and has passed the District's sign language competency examination.

* Applicants must meet the minimum education requirements at the time of submitting an application.
* All minimum qualifications required for this classification (e.g. licenses, certificates, etc.) must be cited on the application or the applicant will be subject to disqualification for this position.
* SELECTION PROCEDURE: Applications are initially screened for qualifying information and qualified applicants will be notified of any further testing or interviews. Testing may include written, oral, performance, or other evaluation methods appropriate to measure knowledge, skills and abilities required.
* APPLICANTS MUST PASS ALL TESTS IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT.
* Applicants will be required to bear the cost of all employment processing including, but not limited to: pre-placement drug screening, TB test and fingerprints.

By July 1, 2009, an Educational Interpreter shall be certified by the National RID; have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA, the ESSE-I, or the NAD/ACCI assessment or have met comparable requirements. If providing Cued Language transliteration, a transliterator shall possess TECUnit certification, or have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA � Cued Speech or have met comparable requirements.
