Job Description

Northrop Grumman Mission Systemsis seeking an experienced UX Designer/Principal UX Designer to work within our team of qualified,diverse individuals. The position is located in Redondo Beach, CA.

 

The people at Northrop Grummanwork on the hardest, most complex problems the world has ever seen. Thesecomplex problems require excellent user experiences, because the data is denseand overwhelming when not intentionally designed to be useful. Our users makedifficult decisions and solve challenging problems that keep people around theworld safe. To support our users and their missions, we have assembled amulti-disciplinary team of UX practitioners focused on building the rightsystems and services and in a way that work well for the users.

 

Our UX designers create trendsby working in our user-centered design process to give color, life, andoriginality to the insights and breakthroughs that come from great userresearch. Working collaboratively with user researchers, you will instantiateideas as prototypes, of all levels of fidelity, so that you can test them withusers.

 

The most important thing thatyou do as a UX designer on this team is to listen. Listen to program managersso that you can help them see the value of excellent user experiences and helpthem implement the practice of user-centered design. Listen to users so thatyou can find ways to make them more productive in their work, to remove theirfrustrating barriers to effectiveness, and when possible to redesign their workto make the most of their skills and knowledge. And listen to your ownteammates so that you can help them practice user-centered design.

 

You learn the jargon and purposebehind the customers' priorities, so that you know the implications of theirstrategic goals on your work. You often find yourself in discussions regardingthe value of design thinking and feel energized when you teach others themethods and tools. You apply your skills in empathizing to your team too, tolearn the dynamics of the team and how to work best with each individual.


You know your strengths andweaknesses and love to flex your design muscles. You will spend your timeworking directly on a project to grow their user-centered design practice byleading collaborative design exercises, making decisions rooted in the sciencebehind the user experience, and iterating on design artifacts.

 

You are capable of working onuser research activities where you engage with customers and users to gather,distill, and share mission insights so that the development team has a betterunderstanding of what problems to solve. You work hand-in-hand with thedevelopment team to construct innovative, yet practical, interactions that meetthe users' information needs. Occasionally, you will help devise strategicdesign and development approaches outside of your primary project to help growour business.

Qualifications

This requisition may be filled at either a UX Designer grade or a Principal UX Designer grade.


Basic Qualifications for a UX Designer are as follows:

  • 2 years of related work experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 0 years of related work experience with a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline
  • Experience with executing user-centered design approaches on projects.
  • Experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and modelsof tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes, andprototypes using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Axure, etc.
  • Abilityto conduct user research and design exercises, such as field observations, userinterviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research,contextual inquiry, design studios, and card sorting.
  • Goodverbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrable success articulating and justifying your design decisions tomultiple stakeholders from systems engineering, software engineering, andcustomers in large and small groups
  • Abilityto back your work with research and evidence while satisfying user needs andsystem requirements.
  • Experience working among a software-development team.
  • ActiveU.S. SCI security clearance with a CI polygraph.

  • 5 years of related work experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 3 years of related work experience with a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 0 years of related work experience with a PhD in a STEM discipline
  • Experience with executing user-centered design approaches on projects.
  • Experience creating and communicating clearly via abstract diagrams and modelsof tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, product wireframes, andprototypes using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Axure, etc.

PreferredQualifications:

  • Demonstrablesuccess and hands-on experience creating and executing user-centered designapproaches on existing or new projects, pursuits, or research opportunities.
  • Demonstrablesuccess and hands-on experience creating and communicating clearly via abstractdiagrams and models of tasks, work, goals, information, decisions, productwireframes, and prototypes of all kinds of fidelity.
  • Demonstrable success and hands-on experience conducting and leading userresearch and design exercises, such as field observations, user interviews,focus groups, brainstorming sessions, ethnographic research, contextualinquiry, design studios, and card sorting.
  • Excellentverbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrable success working in a multidisciplinary team in an Agile softwaredevelopment environment.
