Job Title: Lead Plasma Diagnostic Scientist


Job Description:

TAE Technologies, Inc., formerly known as Tri Alpha Energy, has a national lab sized research program in high-beta magnetically confined fusion plasmas, based around the advanced beam-driven Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC).  It has built and is operating the new C-2W experiment, aka Norman, which is one of the largest fusion plasma experiments in the United States.  The goals of C-2W are to push high beta fusion plasmas into new parameter regimes and to guide the design of future fusion power plants.


The successful candidate will join the Diagnostics group of the C-2W program at TAE, where he/she will lead and manage the entire C-2W Diagnostics section and potentially lead the Spectroscopy & Imaging group. The Diagnostics section consists of multiple units covering major plasma diagnostics disciplines:

  • Probes & Particles: Direct sampling of magnetic and electric fields, the plasma and its particles
  • Interferometry & Thomson: Active probing of the plasma with external lasers
  • Spectroscopy & Imaging: Observation of light emitted from the plasma
  • Fast ions: Direct measurement and observation of fast ions injected by neutral beams.

Each of these units has a group leader responsible for the activities and staff in that discipline. The Diagnostics Section Lead provides overall planning and guidance for the Diagnostics section based on C-2W Program objectives and selects, develops, supports, manages, and leads the group leaders within the Diagnostics section. This includes making hiring, promotion, and staffing decisions, conducting performance reviews, etc. The Section Lead participates in and/or leads projects on a matrix basis, conducts individual scientific research, and also spends a small portion of their time on outwards facing activities like representing TAE and recruiting new talent.


Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in world class plasma experimental program and its operations
  • Set overall objectives and priorities for the Diagnostics section based on a deep understanding of plasma physics and the C-2W Program technical objectives
  • Organize/manage the Diagnostics section for high performance
  • Motivate the staff and ensure clear, consistent communication
  • Evaluate the performance of the group leads and the section overall
  • Develop both technical and leadership talent throughout the section
  • Interface with other sections/groups of the C-2W program, including Experiment and Analysis sections, Theory/Computation groups, and Engineering department
  • Propose, design and develop plasma diagnostic systems as well as analyze its signals/data
  • Develop, validate and maintain data analysis code/software
  • Analyze experimental data by comparing with simulation and physics models
  • Perform documentation of diagnostic development, data analysis and its experimental results


Required Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in plasma physics or related field
  • At least 10 years of experience in plasma experimentation, diagnostics and data analysis with large-scale fusion device/equipment
  • Significant experience with spectroscopy, imaging, and associated plasma diagnostics
  • Experience with basic and high-temperature plasma diagnostics such as magnetic/electric probes, laser-aided diagnostics, and/or fast ion diagnostics
  • Experience managing high-level technical personnel as direct reports
  • Experience managing large-scale scientific projects and/or collaborations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation
  • Ability to work in a diverse R&D environment
  • Ability to organize and schedule work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on short- and long-term research projects


Preferred Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with project collaboration platforms and document management systems
  • Experience with scientific analysis languages (Matlab, IDL, R, Python, etc.)
  • Ability to work extended hours and travel as required
